CR39 Lenses

CR39 is a lightweight advanced polymer that has a high abrasion and scratch resistance. CR39 lenses have the same visual acuity (what you see through the lens) as glass sunglass lenses and more impact resistance.

CR39 sunglass lenses are much lighter than glass and more impact resistant. CR39 lenses are ground and polished (like glass) and not injection moulded. The high glossy finish on the front surface of the lens allows a luxurious finish to the sunglass.

CR39 stand for Columbia Resin batch 39, which was the preferred material when the scientists developed a new lightweight optical lens material in the 1950’s. CR39 lenses today make up something like 80% of all prescription lenses worldwide.

Advantages: excellent optical qualities, impact resistance, highly polished quality appearance.

Acetate Frame

Acetate (Cellulose Acetate is the full name) is an acetate salt of Cellulose. It is one of the earliest synthetic fibres ever developed (1924) and is based on wood (cotton) pulp.

Acetate sunglass frames are hypoallergenic and made from a renewable resource - reforested trees. Because of the wood (cotton) base, acetate can be easily coloured using special dyes and pigments. Acetate does not shrink. Acetate frames are cut from solid sheets of acetate and will retain their shape.
Cellulose acetate was originally developed for cellulose film on which most of the early motion pictures were filmed. It is flammable and hence the main reason why so many early films were lost in studio fires.

Advantages: it is a natural product and therefore comfortable to wear against the skin (hypoallergenic). Acetate comes in a huge range of colours.

6 Base Lens Curvature

The Smith Optics Breakbeat have a 6 base lens curvature. The base curve is the radius of the sphere measured from the back of the sunglass lens. Sunglasses typically come with either a 6, 7, 8 or 9 base lens curvature.

Sunglasses with a 6 base curvature tend to sit relatively flat on your face.

Category 3 Lenses

The Smith Optics Breakbeat have category 3 lenses that meet the AS/NZS 1067:2003 standards for lenses. Category 3 sunglasses offer high sunglare reduction and good UV protection.  The majority of the sunglasses sold through out Australia are category 3 sunglasses.
