Carbonic TLT Lens

The Smith Optics Novella have carbonic TLT (tapered lens technology) lenses. Engineered to be the most impact resistant lens material in the world, Carbonic TLT lenses are optically corrected to maximize visual clarity and object definition. Carbonic TLT polarised and non-polarised sunglass lenses are ideal for sport and casual use.

Polarised Lenses

Polarised sunglass lenses block out a lot of scattered and reflected light (glare). For example, if you look at water in a pool with a standard lens, it is difficult to see an object under water clearly. This is due to the fact that the surface of the water is reflecting light from all different directions. Smith Optics polarised lenses filter those reflected rays so you can see below the surface of the water much more clearly.

Smith Optics polarised Lenses are manufactured using a special material designed to block out glare and only transmit useful light to your eyes. This optically engineered polarising material is a very thin membrane sandwiched between two pieces of optically ground lens material to filter out 99 percent of all reflected light for maximum eye protection.

However, there are some limitations to the use of polarised lenses, some drivers discover that polarised lenses can cause distortions in liquid crystal displays (LCDs). Onboard clocks and other instrument displays may be temporarily unreadable.

Advantages: fantastic for all water sports, especially fishing, where the polarising filter allows vision through the surface reflective glare.

Acetate Frame

Acetate (Cellulose Acetate is the full name) is an acetate salt of Cellulose. It is one of the earliest synthetic fibres ever developed (1924) and is based on wood (cotton) pulp.

Acetate sunglass frames are hypoallergenic and made from a renewable resource - reforested trees. Because of the wood (cotton) base, acetate can be easily coloured using special dyes and pigments. Acetate does not shrink. Acetate frames are cut from solid sheets of acetate and will retain their shape.
Cellulose acetate was originally developed for cellulose film on which most of the early motion pictures were filmed. It is flammable and hence the main reason why so many early films were lost in studio fires.

Advantages: it is a natural product and therefore comfortable to wear against the skin (hypoallergenic). Acetate comes in a huge range of colours.

8 Base Lens Curvature

The Smith Optics Novella have an 8 base lens curvature. The base curve is the radius of the sphere measured from the back of the sunglass lens. Sunglasses typically come with either a 6, 7, 8 or 9 base lens curvature.

Sunglasses with an 8 base curvature will wrap around your face to protect you from the elements.

Category 3 Lenses

The Smith Optics Novella have category 3 lenses that meet the AS/NZS 1067:2003 standards for lenses. Category 3 sunglasses offer high sunglare reduction and good UV protection.  The majority of the sunglasses sold through out Australia are category 3 sunglasses.
